% QuickFind) 3.0 works on (and only on) Newton MessagePads with OS version 2.0
    (and probably on later versions)

% What it does

QuickFind) 3.0 enhances the Find function of the Apple Newton MessagePad in three ways:
1.) It maintains a lists of terms that were searched in the "Look for" pop-up menu so they can be easily found again.
2.) It gives you more options than just searching everywhere, in selected applications or in the current one.
3.) It adds an AutoFind function that usually lets you use the find slip without hitting a single button (there is only one anyway :-).

% Enhanced 'Look for' pop-up menu

With QuickFind 3.0, the nine last terms that were searched are added to the 'Look for' pop-up menu for your convenience. (Fig.3) It also offers the possibility to store up to nine more terms permanently in this pop-up menu. To add a term permanently, just use the 'Add [some text]' item (Fig.3) that shows up whenever there is some text in the Find slip. To remove it again select the term and the menu item changes to 'Remove [some text]'.

% More Options for Finding

The Find function in OS 2.0 now gives you three options to specify a search range. Everywhere, Selected and the Current application (Notepad, Names, etc.). QuickFind gives you three more options. Via the new 'Look in' pop-up menu you can limit your search to the three basic areas (Notepad, Names File, Date Book), to the Names File (for those who mostly look up names), and to everything but Newton Books (so it doesn't search the two thousend-something pages of the Fodor Travel Manager). Instead of a few more radio buttons, all options are put together into one 'Look in' pop-up menu. (Fig.2)

Furthermore, the list of the applications from which one can choose for the selected only option is delegated into the prefs dialog. I think it is disturbing when the find dialog takes half the screen as it does the way it is today. It is still possible to use the find slip while the prefs dialog is open. According to the user interface guidelines, the prefs dialog can be found after hitting the info button.

% AutoFind function

If the AutoFind check-box is marked, then a search is started as soon as new text is entered. That is, when text is selected from the menu, text is entered by hand or the keyboard, or the find slip is opened with some text selected (as the text is entered automaticaly).

% Note: QuickFind may not work with other utilities that tinker with the find slip. You should remove these packages before downloading QuickFind to the Newton MessagePad. If you've written or think about writing an utility that should work together with others, let me know. I've found a way to do so. The guidelines are outlined in the article "Patching the system" in the August 94 issue of PIE Developers magazine.

% Shareware Notice

QuickFind is ShareWare. You may test it for a reasonable time (i.e. 30 days). If you decide to keep it after that period, please register by paying the shareware fee.

Version 2.5.2 of QuickFind showed a reminder every time it was used unless it was registered. I did not include this 'motivation' to pay the shareware fee in QuickFind 3.0. I think it is easier for the user (and hopefully not necessary).

QuickFind may be freely distributed, but it may not be sold. All commercial distribution is prohibited. Only nominal download costs may be collected in connection with online distribution.

The fee is US$ 10.00 / DM 15,-- / S 100,--. Please send cash (no cheques please) to:
